Gout Prevention Diet

A lot of gout suffers are interested in following a gout prevention diet. Someone with gout can sometime be the butt of jokes, but it is no laughing matter. It used to be called the disease of kings, as it seemed to effect only royalty and the upper classes, as they were the only ones wealthy enough to eat a meat-rich diet. Nowadays gout can strike just about anyone, which is why a lot of sufferers are interested in following a gout prevention diet to ward off that next attack.

So the key is the prevention of the build-up of excess uric acid in the blood. And since uric acid is formed out of purines, as a gout sufferer, you must reduce the amount of purines you consume through your food. To start with you need to be able to identify what these gout foods are. Luckily, for the most part, purine-rich foods are also high-protein foods so they are perhaps more easily identified that way.

Other high levels of purines can be found in fish like herring, and mackerel, and some dry beans are also troublesome. Other meats are not as bad, but they still have higher numbers of purines. It is a good idea to limit meat, fish, and poultry foods to about six ounces a day.

Cut some calories! Did you know that Americans generally eat twice the amount that is needed during a typical day? Look around you and see how overweight we have become and more prone to gout. Cutting 50 calories a meal will add up to around 15-20 pounds a year! So switch to diet soda, watch the condiments, easy on the chocolate, and you know the rest! With time, gout symptoms will become less and less.

Another way to achieve gout prevention is to maintain a healthy weight. This is helped by using the good diet mentioned above. People who are overweight will typically see their gout symptoms intensified. Obesity is actually known to facilitate uric acid accumulation inside the body. Overweight people are also at a higher risk for having joint injuries when suffering from gout. Losing weight is a great way to treat gout and prevent it from occurring.

A similar belief was once applied to alcohol. It was thought that spirits, wine, and beer were the true cause of gout. Indeed, drinking to excess can be harmful to gout sufferers, especially due to the resulting dehydration of the body. Hydration is especially important to gout sufferers as it allows the body to flush the uric acid out of the blood, preventing its buildup as crystals on the joints. However, drinking alcohol is not a direct cause of gout.

One of the best ways for gout prevention is to alter your diet. This comes from avoiding foods that have high purine in them, and replacing them with foods with lower purine. Typically, foods that are high in protein and saturated fat, are usually high in purine as well. These include red meats, salmon, trout, anchovies, organ meats, chicken, mushrooms, sausages, sardines, herring, alcohol and animal heart tissue.
